NTU MFA Practicing Uncertainty Group Show - July 2021

I’m currently preparing to show some of my Abstracted 35 scans as part of Practicing Uncertainty, a group show at Backlit in Nottingham, bringing together all my colleagues in the first public event since 2020. It feels quite monumental being at the stage where proper preparation is required, a chance to share work with the general public and see how the work is received. Of all the sets I chose Set Three, because for me, it offers the chance to imagine being near the sea, the colours feel quite reminiscent of all things water.

This is the first time showing the work at the maximum print size that I can do from the images created during the scanning process. I scan them at 4800 dpi so something that is only 3.6mm x 2.4mm in reality can be shown at a huge magnification, bringing out new and surprising details. I particularly love how the marble dust I used creates such complex forms,

Testing different formats and sizes is really important as I attempt to understand what is possible with a new process that blends familiar methods with new techniques and a rectilinear format. Up to this point I’ve shown a4 sized prints on masse, as I talk about in A welcome return to showing work in real life. In a large group of images they create connections and narratives between them, so seeing the large prints, they behave differently. They stand alone but also as part of a group.
