Photography

Photography is a large part of my process and helps me to develop ideas and to catalogue everything from marks in the landscape to new pieces of work. As my practice has developed I’ve become more experimental in my photography from using a vintage Medium Format camera, an instant camera, my smartphone, and my new Fujifilm XT-30 that is forcing me to step up my game.

New Holland, Lincolnshire

November 2020. Fujifilm XT-30

I love spending time in New Holland, it is very industrial but it’s also beautiful in its bleakness.
The juxtapositions of buildings, pathways and the River Humber make for some interesting views.

First trip out with the new camera, just testing what it could do.

Scottish Highlands

September 2020. Rolleicord V

I was lucky to travel to Scotland between lockdowns in September 2020. This time enabled me to experiment with the Rolleicord V. It is fascinating to see the results, particularly after the waiting for the films to be developed. Some of the images had light leaks which altered the quality of the images in a way that is impossible with digital and makes them more of the moment.

Medium Format Experimentation

Summer 2020. Rolleicord V

These images were part of my testing to see how the camera felt and how it worked. It was a massive learning curve thinking about exposures, f-stops and more. The images here aren’t about perfection but allowing the camera to do it’s thing.

My cameras

I have different cameras for different situations.
My trusty iPhone is my every day simple workhorse, I also use:
My Instax SQ6 is for travelling and helps me record my experiences and test different square compositions.
My 1955 Rolleicord V is for slowing down my process, taking time in photographing.
My new Fujifilm XT-30 is something I’m learning with to develop my skills.
I also have a beautiful Pentax Spotmatic that I inherited from my grandad, it doesn’t get much use but it’s a great memory.
